This is that review I published on Exploding Rabbit. Moving the segment over here.
Well, friends, I'm starting a little "project," if you will. I was
browsing MFGG one day and looked at all the fan games. I enjoy
reviewing, and, instead of flooding my own blog with reviews of Mario
fan games, with the reviews section seeming like a site that focuses on
Mario. I also haven't been using the blog feature of Exploding Rabbit
much. So, this project focuses on me, in no particular time, order, or
schduele, to review 1,000 Mario fan games. In these reviews, I will talk
about what I think of the game's graphics, music, concept, physics,
and, of course, gameplay. In the case of demos, I will say whether or
not I think the game has potential to become a good full game. At the
end, I will provide a download link and my opinion on whether or not you
should play the game. Seems like enough rambling, so why don't we start
the review?
We're starting out BIG, with...a random minigame. I was going to start
with "Yoshi Gone MFGG," the first game on MFGG, but it was too broken
for me to get past the first boss, so...yeah. I decided to start with
this. NO COMPLAINING! Anyways, the concept is "Tidal Toss" is that Luigi
is being chased by a giant wave. Obviously having the crap scared out
of him, he runs from it, mouth agape, jumping over blocks and avoiding
Cheep-Cheeps. It is based off of a game made for a minigame contest over
on the site.
First off, the graphics are great, they don't clash, Luigi shows
emotion, the tidal wave looks great, and the Cheep-Cheep oddly meshes
with the style...in a good way. The only song in the game is rather
good, but it doesn't loop well. The sound effects and voice samples fit,
and are rather nice. The physics work well, and, finally, we have a
Mario fan game where the crazy fast running fits. The game is good as a
time killer (MURDERER!), and is addictive...if you're good at it. I
suck, but I still find it fun. Should you try it? Absolutely! My final
ratings of the game? Sure, here you go:
Graphics: 9/10 (Very nice)
Audio: 8/10 (As I said, the music doesn't loop well, but other than that, it works)
Concept: 10/10 (No problems here! DO YOU SEE ANY? DO YOU!?!?!)
Physics: 9/10 (Effective enough, for this type of game)
Controls: 9.5/10 (Responsive, though Shift for jumping isn't a good choice. You can change it, thankfully)
Gameplay: 9.5/10 (Great)
Overall: 9/10
